‘Sister Wives: 1-on-1’ Preview: David Calls ‘Bulls***’ on Kody’s ‘Love’ Confession, Apology to Christine
David Woolley managed to keep his composure during the apology lunch between his wife, Christine Brown, and her ex-husband, Kody Brown, on Sister Wives. But when it comes to the season 20 reunion, David is no longer holding back. In an exclusive sneak peek from Us Weekly for the Sister Wives: 1-on-1 special airing Sunday, January 18, David opens up about his true reaction to Kody, 56, admitting that he once “loved” Christine, 53, before their split.
“My first thought was, ‘Why on earth am I even here?’” David admits. Speaking with reunion host Sukanya Krishnan, the 61-year-old recalls feeling completely uncomfortable in that moment. “It was strange. It really threw me off.” Looking back on Kody’s apology to Christine—his second stop on what he called an apology tour to his former wives—David says he never believed Kody’s intentions were genuine. (Kody and Christine were spiritually married for more than 25 years before separating in 2021 and share six children.)
“I call complete nonsense on that,” David says bluntly. “At this point, it’s no longer about him and Christine. They’ve been apart for three or four years. There’s a basic guy code you don’t break. You don’t tell your ex-wife—right in front of her current husband—that you loved her. That’s just wrong, plain and simple.” While David stayed calm during the lunch itself, he admits the situation still bothers him deeply.
David also explains why he invited Kody to go off-roading in Moab, Utah. “The only reason I suggested it was to test where he was mentally,” he says, describing it as an attempt to move forward and build a healthier blended family dynamic. However, David claims the meeting ultimately turned into something else entirely. “It wasn’t about reconnecting or doing something together. It was about what Kody wanted to say. He needed to make his point, and that was it.”
According to David, Kody’s actions had nothing to do with Christine’s needs or what was best for the family as a whole. “It’s all about what he wants,” David alleges. “Not what Christine wants, not what’s best for this family—just what serves him.”
During season 20 of Sister Wives, Kody made visits to each of his former wives to apologize for how he handled the breakdown of their relationships. He started with Janelle Brown in North Carolina and ended with his first wife, Meri Brown, in Utah. (Kody and Janelle split in 2022, while he and Meri announced their separation in 2023.) His second stop was with Christine in Las Vegas, where she was joined by her new husband, David, whom she married in October 2023.
Although the group later went race car driving together, the conversation during lunch was tense and awkward. The most uncomfortable moment came when Kody admitted that he did, in fact, love Christine—contradicting his previous public statements that he never loved any of his ex-wives. At the time, David offered Kody advice, encouraging him to focus on his children rather than on relationships that had already ended. Kody, however, chose not to take that advice.
In part two of the Sister Wives: 1-on-1 special, Kody stands by his decision. He acknowledges that David likely means well and enjoys offering guidance, but suggests that men often believe they have everything figured out. Kody goes on to claim that plural marriage teaches people how little they truly know, adding that while David thinks he understands everything, he hasn’t yet realized how much he doesn’t know.
Despite this, Kody insists he wants to remain polite toward his ex-wives’ new husband. “I find David likable,” Kody says, “but we don’t really know each other. I think David believes he knows me, but he doesn’t.”
Part two of Sister Wives: 1-on-1 airs on TLC on Sunday, January 18, at 10 p.m. ET.
