‘General Hospital’ Maurice Benard Breaks Silence About Leaving Soap

Maurice Benard has brought Sonny Corinthos to life on General Hospital for decades. In recent years, there has been talk of the actor leaving Port Charles behind. Recently, he opened up about his time on the soap, and his plans for the future, during a recent podcast appearance.

Maurice Benard Has Been Part Of Port Charles Since 1993

Benard first cut his teeth in the world of soaps playing Nico Kelly on All My Children, from 1987 to 1989. However, his big break would come in 1993, when he stepped into the role of Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital.

Originally intended to last six months, Benard would continue in the role for years to come. He would also appear as the character in various spin-offs, such as a few episodes of Port Charles. Outside of his acting work, he is also known for his “State of Mind” podcast, in which he often speaks with other soap stars.

Recently, however, fans saw Benard on another podcast. The actor appeared on Richard Taite’s “We’re Out of Time” podcast. During this appearance, Benard addressed claims that his time on General Hospital was coming to an end.

Benard assured fans, “No, I’m not leaving,” putting such rumors to rest. He continued, noting that he’s been the subject of such rumors for quite a while. As he shared, “There have always been a lot of people [saying that]. I think they’re saying I’m dying, too, like I have cancer or something.”

Benard Also Discussed What His Plans Are For When He Does Leave General Hospital

While all things must come to an end, Benard assured that Sonny is staying on the show for the time being. As he explained, his contract still has a “year left.” However, he also shared that he isn’t planning on leaving the soap anytime soon. Benard noted, “Look, I’m going to retire, but I don’t think it’s going to be before I’m 65.”

Regarding such rumors, Benard shared that he isn’t too bothered by people sharing such stories. He shared, “Let people say what they say.” He also admitted that he won’t stay on the show forever, as working on the soap can be “mentally taxing.”

The actor also considered what he would be doing after leaving the show, noting, “When I leave, I’ll have [my podcast], State of Mind, maybe [I’ll] do that more.” However, both he and the host admitted a little “structure” was needed in life. Benard added, “Financially, I’m pretty good, but you’re right. I already know what happens to my mind when I’m living in it alone.”
