A Goodbye That Broke Her: Genie Francis’ Heartfelt Message About Anthony Geary Leaves Fans in Tears
We were all shocked and heartbroken to learn of Anthony Geary’s passing. He and Luke were not just an inextricable part of General Hospital, but were synonymous with daytime itself.
Luke and Laura’s romance remade the show back in the ’80s and, as we all know, their wedding was the highest rated soap opera episode ever in daytime history. Nothing ever came close to it before, and nothing ever will again.
Few worked with Geary like Genie Francis did, and that’s something that became so heartbreakingly clear when she shared how she learned of her former leading man’s passing.
“This morning I woke up and went into my husband’s arms,” the actress shared on X in a series of tweets. “In my sleep, my life was flashing before me and I was afraid of death.
An hour later, I received a call from [executive producer] Frank Valentini, he told me Tony died. I immediately felt remorse.
I hadn’t spoken to him in years, but I felt his life end in my sleep last night, and with it a big part of me, and mine.”
She went on to share that Geary “was a powerhouse as an actor. Shoulder to shoulder with the greats. No star burned brighter than Tony Geary. He was one of a kind.
As an artist, he was filled with a passion for the truth, no matter how blunt, or even a little rude it might be, but always hilariously funny.
He was the anti-hero, always so irreverent, but even the most conservative had to smile. Working with him was always exciting. You never knew what might happen.”
Luke and Laura would split apart and come back together many times over the decades, but Francis will never forget the stories they told and the scenes they shared. And he’ll always be a part of her.
“He spoiled me for leading men for the rest of my life,” Francis wrote in her final tweet. “I am crushed, I will miss him terribly, but I was so lucky to be his partner.
Somehow, somewhere, we are connected to each other because I felt him leave last night. Good night sweet prince, good night.”
There’s nothing more we could say to come close to such an honest, beautiful farewell. Our hearts go out to Francis and all of Geary’s loved ones as they say goodbye.
